National Schools Geological Challenge 2017 Regional Final Runners Up
The Down High School team of six Year 13 geographers: Emily Adams, Rachel Bogie, Emily Irving, Beth Jones, Georgie Greer and Gabrielle Ross were the runners up, coming second, in the National Schools Geological Challenge Regional Final in Methodist College Belfast. In this, the Geological Society's Year of Risk, teams of science, geography and geology students had to produce a themed poster, and develop a five minute presentation on their chosen (geology related) topic to a panel of leading geologists from academia and industry. This year the theme was geohazards and the DHS team chose to create a presentation and poster about the unusual limnic eruption of Lake Nyos in Cameroon in 1986 which "mysteriously" killed over 1800 people. This was a fantastic achievement, particularly as other schools entered teams who study Geology A-Level. It was a true team effort - Congratulations!
