From Down High to Downing Street
On Thursday 18th January Down High School’s Jack Campbell represented Northern Ireland as part of a youth advocacy group in Westminster.
As a forum member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the Year 13 student met with MPs to ask questions and discuss the effect of the upcoming Brexit on the environment.
Jack met with Kerry McCarthy MP of the Environmental Audit Select Committee, sat in on a debate in Westminster and met with Sir John Randal in Downing Street. These were great opportunities for Jack, who studies Politics as one of his A-Level subjects.
Karen Shiel from the RSPB said: “It was Jack Campbell's fabulous knowledge of local issues affecting species and habitats coupled with his personal experience of volunteering that led to us offering him a place on the visit to Westminster.”
Jack himself said: “I have a massive interest in politics as it is, so I’m really pleased to have the chance to visit somewhere as iconic as Downing Street. I believe it is also the first time that Northern Ireland has been involved in this, so that’s exciting too.”
