Down High Announces Link with Ulster Rugby Academy Partnership
Last Thursday, we proudly announced that we have been named as one, of only five, Ulster schools privileged to take part in the Ulster Rugby Academy Partnership.
This programme, established last year, aims to strengthen existing links between the Ulster Rugby team and the talented young players being developed in schools across the Province. The purpose of this scheme is to develop a player-centred approach, enabling young players to reach their full potential and providing all players with a positive experience of rugby participation.
The launch of the partnership is recognition of the high standard of rugby provision that is evident in Down High School. It also reflects the strong level of performance that is maintained throughout the rugby programme, something that can only be achieved by focusing on the welfare of the player. It is notably that the school’s involvement with the scheme is only possible because of the excellent strength and conditioning programme that is currently operating. Maud Perry, Principal of Down High, welcomed the initiative and the additional support that it will bring to all the coaches and, most importantly, players who attend the school. She stated that, ‘this partnership is a fabulous accolade for the school and demonstrates the impressive work and achievements of the rugby programme’.

This exciting opportunity reinforces the significant success of current Down High pupils. In year 14, Zac Ward has had the opportunity to play for the U19 Ulster squad while year 13 pupils, Claytan Milligan, Lewis Finlay and Robin Wilson have played key positions on the Ulster Schools side. Claytan and Lewis also gained the chance to train with the Irish Schools squad. The accomplishments of these pupils reflect the high standard of coaching, provided by experienced and qualified staff. The school has also been delighted to witness, earlier this season, former pupil and current assistant 1st XV coach, Aaron Cairns, make his debut for the full Ulster side against Edinburgh.
Thursday marked the beginning of this exciting venture and to celebrate the official launch of the partnership programme a school assembly was held for all rugby players. Special guests, Aaron Cairns and John Donnan (a past pupil currently on a development contract with Ulster Rugby) came into school for a question and answer session.
