As part of the Education Authority's initiative to provide an opportunity for pupils across Northern Ireland to visit the battlefields and cemeteries of the Great War, Dr Doherty accompanied two Year 10 pupils - Fay Lightbody and Jonathan Jackson - to the Western Front last week. The trip included visits to Thiepval and the Ulster Tower in the Somme sector, as well as the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, Ypres. Dr Doherty, Fay and Jonathan were also invited to observe a poignant full military funeral for a British soldier whose remains were discovered just recently.
