Primary School Pupils

Welcome to Down High School’s website. You may be thinking of coming here next year or the year after, so we thought you might like to learn a little about the school.

There are over 900 pupils at Down High and around seventy teachers. We think that the school is friendly and that you will settle in quickly. That’s what the pupils tell us.
Our day starts at five minutes to nine o’ clock and ends at 3.20pm.

When you come to Down High you will join one of five form classes. Each class is attached to one of the Houses:

  • Down
  • Lecale
  • Rathkeltair
  • Mourne
  • Strangford

Your form teacher will look after you and help you to settle into your new school.

You will meet lots of new friends and have the opportunity to take part in a range of clubs and societies

Boys will play rugby and cricket. Girls will play hockey and netball. Our pupils start to play against young people from other schools at this early age.

In October Year 8 pupils and form teachers go to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum at Cultra for a two-night residential. It’s always great fun.

Below are some of the comments our pupils made about Down High.

My primary school was pretty big but when I went to the open night for Down High, I was completely surprised at just how much was going on there and when I finally left to go home I thought; “Wow!!!”

My highlight of Year 8 so far has to be the Cultra trip. You do lots of fun activities there and it’s really good craic. They even have a Victorian sweet shop. Another activity is a talent show. It’s great fun and really entertaining! See if you can win over the teachers (sorry judges) and you’re in for a treat. On another day we all dressed up as Victorians. It’s very amusing to see people in these costumes and the teachers join in too!

As far as I'm concerned, all the teachers are really great and they really make you feel welcome in first year.

There are lots of different sports and activities available at Down High. There is also the Junior Choir, Concert Band, Cookery, Junior Scripture Union and loads more.
