Holocaust Memorial Day

26th Jan 2017

DHS commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day 2017 with assemblies delivered by the HMD Trust Youth Champions. Year 12 pupils Annie Magowan, Charlotte Leslie and Jack Campbell informed pupils about the reasons genocides happen, examined the various genocides that have taken place since WW2 and explored ways in which communities have worked on reconciliation. Thanks is offered to Mrs Shirley Lennon (HMD Trust Northern Ireland Support Worker) for her valuable contributions this week and for introducing Monday's junior assembly.

In addition, on Wednesday 25th January, History students from Down High School and the Assumption Grammar School attended a Holocaust Memorial Day event in the Down Museum. They had the privilege of listening to a very moving personal account of life in the hell that was Auschwitz by Mindu Hornik, a survivor of the Holocaust.
